Alabama's (AL) CPA exam requirements are very specific regarding the accounting and business courses that are required to be taken prior to sitting for the exam. You also need to be a US Citizen, so any international students need to be aware before trying to apply. Be sure to follow each caption below to ensure that you are qualified to sit for the exam.
Disclosure: Please note that I do my best to keep these requirements up to date but seeing as there are more than 50 states and nations with individual requirements it is difficult for me to keep up with them all. Please verify each requirement with your state board of accountancy to ensure 100% accuracy!
AL requires at least a bachelor degree and 150 hours
AL requires 33 semester hours from a 4 year university. Note that community college courses do not count towards these hours.
AL requires 27 semester hours excluding accounting hours
AL requires 3 semester hours of business law
You are not required to take the AICPA Ethics exam unless you passed REG before 2004 and/or BEC before 1994. I would recommend checking with the Alabama state board if you have any questions.
Not required to be a resident, employee, or have an office in the state in order to sit
Alabama's minimum age to sit is 19
Alabama has fairly standard exam fee rates.
Initial Application Fee:
$50.00 Re-examination application fee
NOTE: Alabama is one of 5 two-tiered states. This means that you will receive a CPA certificate for passing the exam and the ethics exam. In order to become licensed you will need the following experience.
To obtain your CPA license, AL requires at least 1 year of public accounting experience
-or-
2 years non-public accounting experience which includes private sector, governmental or education.
